MAson HAll project
Los Angeles
Mason Hall is a studio artist working in many forms and regularly collaborating with friends and family under various umbrellas projects sometimes only for the experiential aspects of collaboration or the conceptual notions that arise in making. American Work pieced together projects made between 1999-2004 and chronicled his personal move from Chicago to Los Angeles in 2001.
The film project is divided up into 3 acts “Our Past rights” ,“Present State Rights” and “Future Capabilities”. The first act (Our Past rights) is a reenactment of the duel between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton woven with a video proformation done in LA’s Chinatown. The second act, Present State Rights, the Gettysburg Address is reworked and expounded by a hollywood producer berating his assistant played by Mason. The final act is a two part performance of Mason working in his studio and dragging found televisions to the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles Hills.
American Work is an umbrella project that was less about making a polished film and more about the collaborative and performative aspects of being in a production. The film premiered at a chinatown bar hosted by the New Chinatown Barber Shop Gallery. learn more>
